Special Agent Jaime Zapata
 
Special Agent Jaime Zapata was shot and killed in the line of duty while driving between Monterrey, Mexico, and Mexico City on February 15, 2011 by an unknown assailant. Special Agent Zapata joined ICE in 2006. He was assigned to the Office of the Deputy Special Agent in Charge in Laredo, Texas, where he served on the Human Smuggling and Trafficking Unit as well as the Border Enforcement Security Task Force.  At the time of his death, he had been temporarily detailed to the ICE attaché office at the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City. Special Agent Zapata gave the ultimate sacrifice for his country

 

In an effort to express our sincere sympathy, the annual Special Agent of the Year award was renamed to the Jaime J. Zapata Special Agent of the Year award.
